Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

By News

Staying hydrated is essential if you regularly practice our hot yoga and Pilates classes. But in the summer, it becomes even more important.

Adequate hydration helps the heart pump more efficiently, optimizes blood pressure, regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, aids in digestion and more.

When practicing at Sterling Hot Yoga & Wellnesswe recommend drinking a minimum of half of your body weight in ounces (even more in the summer!) at least 40 minutes before class begins.

Drinking water is one of the best ways to stay hydrated. But you can get hydrated in other ways, such as by eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Coconut water and other electrolyte replacements may help you bounce back after an especially hot day and/or yoga or Pilates session.

Some other tips to stay hydrated, even in the Gulf Coast summer heat:

– Invest in a reusable water bottle. Invest in a reusable water bottle. Keep it filled and close by, and take regular water breaks throughout the day.

– Set water consumption goals daily and stick to them! Set water consumption goals and stick to them! It may help to set a schedule just to keep you on track.

– Infuse your water with flavor to make it more appealing. If the taste of water gets too boring, boost it with the addition of fresh fruit, like limes, lemons, berries, cucumbers and the like.

We’ve got great hydration options at the studio just for you! Whether you need water or coconut water, we’ve got you covered to keep up your hydration or help you replenish after class!

Build a Stronger, Safer Backward Bend in April Workshop

By Events

BOOK YOUR CLASS BELOW

Backbending Essentials

with Michelle Ryan

Saturday April 30 from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Backward bends are essential in any yoga practice, as they provide a counter-stretch from forward folds. But think of the MANY forward folds you do every day, from cooking to driving to working over a computer to texting. Not only does backward bending provide an important counter movement to these activities, but also it helps you maintain a strong, healthy spine and improved posture. This month you can learn to build a stronger, safer backbend with Michelle Ryan on Saturday, April 30 from 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Michelle will break down postures in the original hot yoga sequence (and their complements in vinyasa) and discuss ways to help you deepen your practice. During the workshop, she will present various stretches and tips to help you open your shoulders, hamstrings and hips to improve your backward bend. Expect a lively discussion and individual feedback on your postures as time allows. The room will be heated, but not quite as hot as the original hot yoga class. You are welcome to bring a notebook and pen as well. Reserve your spot for $35. We look forward to hosting this workshop for you. Look for more helpful workshops in the months to come!

Our New 75-Minute Class Is a Hit!

By Announcement

We debuted our Original Hot 75-minute class on Thanksgiving Day, and we’ve made it a regular part of our schedule.

It’s a great way to experience more of the classic Original Hot 90-minute sequence, while saving a little time. You’ll do one set of just a few postures.

Check it out on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. or Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

We’ve gotten great feedback from students, so make plans to try it if you haven’t already!

NEW! Wheel Yin Yoga Class on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 4:30 PM

By Events
Have you ever used a yoga wheel?

It’s a great prop to help massage the spine, assist in deep backbends and aid in flexibility, and we’re introducing them at Sterling!

Join Michelle on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. for a yin yoga class that will incorporate yoga wheels.

We’ll have wheels available at the studio for sale or rent, or you can bring your own.

We also encourage you to bring a thick towel or thin blanket if you do participate.

Wheels are commonly associated with deepening backbends and assisting in reducing tightness in the chest and shoulders.

But this class will also make use of the wheel in forward folds and hip-opening poses.

Sign up here in advance so you will have access to a wheel and to reserve your spot. Class size is limited!

This is the first of what we hope are even more wheel yoga classes, so we hope you can join us and let us know what you think!

Hot Vinyasa Fusion Returns Monday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.

By Events

Looking for a class that combines the best of Bikram Yoga AND the best of vinyasa flow? We’ve got it!

Hot Vinyasa Fusion is back on Monday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Michelle will lead this 75-minute class that begins with several rounds of chaturangas, stretches and even some original hot yoga postures mixed in.

Then it transitions to some balancing poses and floor work that will be very familiar if you practice the 26 and 2 regularly.

It’s heated to about 100 degrees, so you will still work up a good sweat!

The original hot yoga sequence helps maintain and restore natural range of motion, but it is sometimes criticized for not having much of a focus on the upper body or hip openers. That’s where Hot Vinyasa Fusion comes in!

If you’ve tried it and loved it, your chance to practice it again is coming up soon. If you haven’t taken it yet, so is your chance to try it!

Sign up for the in-studio class here or the livestream option here!

Masks On for Breathing Exercises in Hot Yoga Classes!

By Announcement

Given the resurgence of COVID-19 cases, we are adjusting our mask requirements in our hot yoga classes.

Until recently, we taught closed-mouth breathing in pranayama to begin the class and blowing in firm to end it. We will encourage everyone to practice these again the same way.

If you prefer to practice these breathing exercises with an open mouth as they are typically taught, we will require masks on.

This applies to the breathing exercises only, and the mask may be removed for the yoga practice.

Masks will be available at the front desk. Please continue to observe social distancing inside and outside of the hot room.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding!
